NMBI registration for internationally educated nurses

To practise as a nurse in Ireland you must be registered with the NMBI. The Irish route works differently from the UK one in a way that matters early: your qualification is assessed first, and what you have to do next depends on the outcome of that assessment.

The route, in order

    Check your eligibility first

    The NMBI expects a nursing programme of at least three years, registration in the country where you trained, and post-qualification practice. Knowing where you stand before you pay assessment fees is the point of doing this first.

    Apply for qualification recognition

    You submit your qualification and registration evidence to the NMBI, which assesses your training against Irish requirements. This assessment is the gateway to everything else.

    Receive your Decision Letter

    The NMBI issues a Decision Letter setting out its finding. It may confirm your qualification is recognised, or it may require a compensation measure. This letter is what allows you to look for a sponsoring role, which is why it comes before the exams rather than after them.

    Complete a compensation measure, if you are asked for one

    There are two routes and they are genuine alternatives, not sequential stages: an Aptitude Test, which includes an OSCE component, or a supervised Adaptation Period completed in an Irish healthcare setting and confirmed by the Director of Nursing.

    Meet the English language requirement

    IELTS Academic or OET, assessed per skill. Check the validity period against your expected timeline before you book.

    Registration decision

    Once your compensation measure, language evidence and remaining documents are complete, the NMBI makes its decision. Timescales are the regulator's and vary with the completeness of your file.

English language requirement

The NMBI accepts IELTS Academic or OET. The requirement is assessed per skill rather than on an overall average, and results have a limited validity period, so sitting the test too early in your process can mean sitting it twice.
